Infrared Beam Counters offer a cost effective way of obtaining basic footfall trends. However, they should not be expected to acheive high levels
of accuracy, and are therefore not suitable for occupancy monitoring. The accuracy of beam counters is affected by the concentration and flow of customers past the beams.
The wider the entrance, the lower the expected accuracy. They will not count whilst the beam is blocked e.g. by an inward opening door.
They can also be affected by direct sunlight.

Single Beam Counter
Wall mounted single beam counter are supplied ready for use complete with mains adaptor,
reflector and two magnetic activators. These units can be set to count either legs or bodies, and to automatically divide by two where the entry point is also used
as an exit.
The Single Beam unit must be positioned on a solid surface. The unit sits on one side of an entrance. It is simple to install and emits a single infra-red beam that is reflected from a reflector placed directly opposite the unit. The single beam counts when people enter and leave the site, the total can then be divided by two to give you total footfall. This unit is suitable for single entrances no greater than 5 metres in width.

The Q-Scan SIMcounter & Zigbee Counter
The SIMcounter doesn't need a reflector, so it only needs mounting on one side of an entrance (maximum width 2.5 meters). It works by measuring changes in the range of the beam. It then sends people count data via GPRS to a website
where you can see a detailed breakdown of visitors counts both in and out, along with daily totals. It's easy to install and configure via a mobile phone. The cost of sending data via GPRS will depend on your phone network supplier.
The ZigbeeCounter uses the same hardware, but the GPRS Modem is replaced with a wireless transmitter. This sends data to a local PC via a Zigbee dongle. This PC must run Windows XP or later and be connected to
the internet in order for the counts to be sent to the Q-Scan reporting website. (N.B. The local PC operating system needs to be XP or above. It will be configured remotely by our engineers)
